The book covered: Ascent to Felicity translated by Faraz A. Khan, written originally by Abu ‘I-Iklas al-Shurunbulali titled Maraaqi ‘l-Sa’aadat

  1. Intention
  2. Using the toothstick
  3. Mentioning the name of Allah
  4. Washing the hands up to and including the wrists in the beginning of wudu
  5. Maintaining the correct order of limbs (Therefore performing wudu in the order or face, arms, head, and feet is not obligatory, they would have done wrong by ignoring an obligatory sunnah.)
  6. Continuity
  7. Washing the limbs three complete times
  8. Rinsing the entire mouth three times
  9. Rinsing the soft part of the nose three times
  10. Running one’s wet fingers through the beard
  11. Running one’s wet fingers in between the fingers and toes
  12. Wiping the entire head once and the ears, with the same water
  13. Rubbing the limbs
  14. Starting with the right
  15. Wiping the back of the neck, but is not a Sunnah

Among the Etiquette (adab) of Wudhu:

  1. Facing the Qibla
  2. Avoiding the water used in wudhu
  3. Making supplication (du’a) with those words that have been narrated
  4. Mentioning the name of Allah when washing each limb
  5. Performing wudhu by oneself
  6. Rushing to perform wudhu before the prayer time comes in, unless one has a chronic excuse
  7. Reciting the two testimonies of faith after wudhu
  8. Drinking from the leftover water afterwards

Among the things disliked (makrooh) in Wudhu:

  1. Wasting water
  2. Using too little water when washing (at least two drops have to fall off from the limb, so little water cannot be used that it is deemed as just wiping)
  3. Striking or slapping the face with water when washing it
  4. Speaking during wudhu other than making supplication
  5. Having someone else assist one in wudhu without a valid excuse

In order to perform wudhu someone must adhere to the following:

  1. Islam
  2. Puberty
  3. Sanity
  4. Termination of menstruation, postnatal bleeding, or the state of ritual impurity
  5. Access to and ability to use sufficient purifying water
  6. Ability to perform the salah

The conditions of the validity of Wudhu are the Following:

  1. That purifying water completely encompasses the skin
  2. The removal of anything that blocks water from reaching the surface of the skin
  3. The ending of any state that contradicts it while washing, such as the appearance of urine at the tip of the penis

Its legal ruling (hukm) is the permissibility of that which was impermissible before it, such as performing the prayer or touching the Quran. The integrals of Wudhu are those mentioned above, however there are three categories that Wudhu is performed for: obligatory, mandatory, and recommended.

  1. Obligatory (fard) to be in a state of Wudhu:
    • The ritual prayer
    • The prostration of recital
    • Touching a verse of the Qu’ran
  2. Mandatory (wajib) to be in a state of Wudhu:
    • Performing tawaf
    • Touching a book of Qu’ran exegesis
  3. Recommended (mandub) to be in a state of Wudhu:
    • Touching a book of (Fiqh) or of any Islamic knowledge such as Hadith
    • To renew one’s wudhu for another prayer
    • To avoid disagreement of scholars of other schools of thought
    • Before sleeping
    • After waking up from sleep
    • After every sin
    • After laughing out loud outside of the prayer

Wudhu is nullified by any one of the following things:

  1. Anything that exists from the two openings, such as the penis, anus, or vagina
  2. Filth that flows from other than the two openings, such as blood or pus (Flowing blood is defined as past the point of exit, this ruling is applied even if it is squeezed out and then flows, but not if it just collects around the wound and just rises.)
  3. Vomiting a mouthful or more
  4. Sleeping in the position such that buttocks is not firmly planted onto the ground
  5. Loss of consciousness
  6. Insanity
  7. Drunkeness
  8. Laughing out loud, by an adult, while performing the prayer
  9. Contact between an erect penis and vagina
